Summer’s Grand Finale
August in Jackson Hole: Western Traditions, Scenic Adventures & Mountain Memories

August is the Jackson Hole many visitors picture when they close their eyes — wide-open skies, horseback riders, mountain adventures, and the authentic Western traditions that have shaped this valley for generations.
The parks remain spectacular, but August is also one of the best months to explore beyond the usual tourist stops. Soak in a natural hot spring, discover a quieter alpine lake, cycle Jackson’s pathways, or cheer on cowboys at the rodeo. There’s no shortage of unforgettable experiences waiting just outside the door.
This month we’re celebrating the adventurous spirit of Jackson Hole — and sharing a few local favorites to help you experience summer before it quietly gives way to fall.
Savor the Last Full Month of Summer

August brings warm afternoons, cool mountain mornings, and some of our favorite long summer evenings before autumn begins to settle into the Tetons.
It’s a wonderful time for wildlife viewing, scenic drives, and enjoying downtown Jackson at its liveliest before the quieter fall season arrives.
Elk Refuge Inn sits 1.5 miles north of downtown Jackson — a quick few- minute drive into town for restaurants, galleries, and the Town Square, while still
tucked just outside the hustle and bustle. Step out our front door and you’re looking directly across at the National Elk Refuge, with the iconic Sleeping
Indian range in full view to the east.

Celebrate Jackson’s Western Heritage
Jackson Hole Rodeo
No summer visit to Jackson Hole feels complete without the Jackson Hole Rodeo. For decades this beloved tradition has showcased authentic cowboy skills — barrel racing, bull riding, saddle bronc, team roping, and more — in a family-friendly evening that feels uniquely Wyoming.
Jackson Hole Shoot-Out
The world’s longest-running Shoot-Out returns to Town Square six nights a week this summer (Monday–Saturday) — a free, family-friendly re-enactment that’s entertained visitors since 1957. The season wraps over Labor Day Weekend, so August is one of your last chances to catch it this year.
| Local tip: Grab dinner on the Square first, then stake out a spot a few minutes before 6 p.m. — the Shoot-Out crowd builds quickly.
Adventure Beyond the Crowds
Jackson Hole offers countless outdoor experiences, but a few local favorites remain surprisingly under the radar.
Slide Lake
Looking for a quieter escape from the busiest areas of Grand Teton National Park? Lower Slide Lake, east of the Tetons in the Bridger-Teton National Forest,
offers beautiful mountain scenery, fishing, kayaking, and peaceful picnic spots with far fewer crowds. A wonderful option for a relaxed afternoon surrounded by nature.

Granite Hot Springs
Nestled south of Jackson, Granite Hot Springs is the perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking or sightseeing. A naturally heated mineral pool surrounded by towering pines — one of Wyoming’s most relaxing destinations, and the drive in is half the fun.

Explore Jackson by Bike
One of the easiest ways to enjoy the valley is on two wheels. Miles of paved pathways connect downtown, the parks, neighborhoods, and scenic viewpoints.
Guests at Elk Refuge Inn can take advantage of our complimentary bikes, making it easy to spend a leisurely morning exploring without worrying about
parking.
| Local tip: Ride early for cooler temperatures and the best chance of spotting wildlife along the pathway.

Local Favorites for August - A Wyoming Steak Night
After a day exploring, nothing satisfies quite like a great Wyoming steak. Three favorites, each with its own character.
Cowboy Steakhouse
Hand-cut steaks, rustic Western charm, and friendly service — a longtime favorite for an authentic Jackson dining experience.
Gun Barrel Steak & Game House
One of Jackson Hole’s iconic restaurants, Gun Barrel specializes in premium steaks, bison, elk, and game dishes served in a classic lodge atmosphere.
The White Buffalo Club
For an elevated steakhouse experience, White Buffalo combines USDA Prime steaks with an intimate setting just steps from Town Square. Perfect for a special-occasion dinner after a day of adventure.
Relax After Your Wyoming Adventure

After a day of hidden lakes, hot springs, rodeo nights, or downtown Jackson, there’s nothing better than returning to a quiet place to recharge. Open the
windows to cool mountain breezes, watch the sunset paint the Tetons, and look out across the National Elk Refuge as the valley settles for the night.
A Preview of September
As August winds down, the valley starts shifting. September brings cooler mornings, the first golden aspens along the Snake River Canyon, and one of
Jackson Hole’s signature cultural events — the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival (Sept 9–20). More on all of it in next month’s edition.
