April in Jackson Hole: Renewal, Wildlife & Quiet Discovery
April is a season of renewal — where snow recedes from the valley floor, wildlife becomes more active, and the first signs of spring begin to emerge. The pace softens, offering a more peaceful, reflective experience of Jackson Hole before the summer rush arrives.
April: The Best-Kept Secret in Jackson Hole

Looking for the perfect time to visit Jackson Hole without the crowds or peak-season prices? April is it. The valley is quieter, the views are stunning, and rooms at Elk Refuge Inn are available at some of our best rates of the year.
Why April Is the Smart Time to Visit
■ Budget-friendly rates — Enjoy comfortable King bed rooms at value-season pricing before summer rates begin.
■ Fewer crowds — Jackson Hole is in its peaceful transition between ski season and the busy summer rush that kicks off in May.
■ Beautiful views — The Tetons are breathtaking in spring with snow-capped peaks against blue skies, and you’ll have them practically to yourself.
A Note on the National Parks
While April is a wonderful time to explore the town of Jackson and the National Elk Refuge, keep in mind that Yellowstone and Grand Teton are still waking up for the season:
■ Grand Teton National Park — Teton Park Road is expected to open to vehicles around May 1. Until then, the road is open for biking, running, and walking — a local favorite. The Craig Thomas Visitor Center opens April 10 (daily, 10am–4pm).
■ Yellowstone National Park — Roads begin opening in phases starting April 17 (Mammoth to Old Faithful via West Entrance). The South Entrance connecting to Grand Teton opens around May 8. The North Entrance at Gardiner, MT is open year-round.
Plan your visit around the park openings and you’ll get the best of both worlds — budget-friendly rates at the Inn now, and front-row access to the parks as they come alive in May.

Fresh Flavors & Local Favorites
El Metate — Authentic Mexican, Local Favorite
If you’re looking for the real deal, El Metate is it. This beloved local spot on West Broadway serves authentic Mexican food — not Tex-Mex — with generous portions, hand-rolled tortillas, and prices that can’t be beat.
Local tip: Check the poster board by the hostess desk. The daily specials aren’t on the menu — and they’re some of the best things in the house.
Our Go-To Favorites
■ Tampiqueña — A beautifully plated classic, always satisfying.
■ Carne Asada & Enchiladas — The enchiladas come drenched in a rich green salsa bath that’s unforgettable.
■ Quesadillas — So generously filled, one could easily feed two people.
Truly, anything you order you can’t go wrong. And if you get lucky and they have pozole or mixiote (a bag of meat slow-steamed in red sauce, served with beans and rice on the side) on the specials board — you’re in for a real treat.
Cafe Genevieve — Brunch & Beyond in a Historic Log Cabin
A Jackson Hole institution just half a block from the Town Square, Cafe Genevieve serves southern-inspired dishes made with ingredients from local producers like Snake River Farms and Vertical Harvest — all inside a charming log cabin that’s on the National Register of Historic Places.
For Brunch
Start with their bottle-service mimosas — the perfect way to kick off a spring morning. Then dig into one of their standout brunch plates:
■ Cajun Eggs Benedict — Made with house-made boudin sausage; a Genevieve signature.
■ Fried Green Tomato Benedict — A southern twist that’s become a guest favorite.
■ Pig Candy — Thick applewood-smoked bacon baked low and slow in a blend of sugars and spices. So popular they now sell it by the box.
For Lunch
Their chicken salad is a light, satisfying favorite — perfect after a morning of exploring. The lunch menu also features hearty sandwiches and seasonal dishes, all served daily from 8am–3pm.
