If you've been counting down the days until the mountains turn white again, November is your month.

There's a special kind of excitement in Jackson Hole when ski season returns. Skis come out of storage, the mountains begin filling with fresh tracks, and conversations around town turn to snowfall predictions and opening-day plans.

Grand Targhee Resort — November 20

Across the Teton Range, Grand Targhee is scheduled to kick off the winter season on Friday, November 20.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort — November 27

The wait is almost over!

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is scheduled to open for the 2026–27 winter season on Friday, November 27—the day after Thanksgiving.

One of Jackson Hole's most remarkable winter traditions doesn't involve ski lifts, holiday lights, or even snow.

It happens quietly, across the landscape, as thousands of elk begin their annual migration.

Every autumn, elk leave their higher-elevation summer ranges and gradually make their way toward the National Elk Refuge.

As temperatures fall and snow begins covering natural feeding areas, more elk arrive in the valley. By winter, the Refuge becomes home to one of the region's most impressive seasonal wildlife gatherings.

And for guests staying at Elk Refuge Inn, this extraordinary landscape is directly across the road.

November marks the beginning of the migration season, although the largest herds typically arrive later, depending on snowfall and weather.

October has a way of making Jackson Hole feel like it belongs to you. Summer crowds have thinned, the mountains are often already wearing their first dusting of snow, and crisp mornings give way to beautiful fall afternoons. Around the valley, the final weeks of the season are unfolding before winter quietly takes over.

This is your last call for many classic warm-weather experiences in Grand Teton and Yellowstone — the final gondola rides, the last days inside historic park

lodges, one more chance to explore before seasonal roads and visitor facilities begin closing.

But October isn’t simply the end of one season. Jackson is still very much alive, with art at the historic Murie Ranch, live music downtown, Halloween traditions on Town Square, and — one of our favorite sounds — the bugling of bull elk echoing across the valley at dawn and dusk as the rut winds down.

The Quiet Season Has Arrived

October brings one of the most dramatic transitions of the year to Jackson Hole. Autumn colors linger in parts of the valley while the first signs of winter appear on the surrounding peaks. The days are quieter, downtown slows down, and familiar landscapes take on a different personality.

It’s an especially peaceful time to stay at Elk Refuge Inn. We’re 1.5 miles north of downtown Jackson — a quick few-minute drive to restaurants, galleries, and

seasonal events — and the National Elk Refuge stretches directly across the road with the Sleeping Indian framing every sunrise.

From October 9–11, the Murie Ranch Art Festival celebrates the natural world through artist demonstrations, workshops, conversations, family activities, and opportunities to create in one of the most inspiring landscapes in the valley. The ranch was once home to conservationists Olaus and Mardy Murie, whose work helped shape America’s modern wilderness movement.

One Last Ride Above the Valley

Bridger Gondola — Final Sightseeing Week, October 5–11

Want one last look at Jackson Hole from above before winter? The Bridger Gondola at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort stays open for fall sightseeing October 5–11, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 12-minute ride climbs more than 2,700 vertical feet above the valley floor, opening sweeping views of the Tetons and the valley below — fall colors below, cooler mountain air above, and perhaps an early dusting of snow.

| Local tip: Conditions at elevation can feel very different from downtown Jackson. Bring an extra layer even if it’s comfortable when you leave the Inn.

Your October Park Checklist & the Bugling Elk

Listen for the Rut

The elk rut peaks in September and still echoes through early October — the haunting bugle of a bull elk is one of the signature sounds of fall in Jackson Hole. Head into Grand Teton at dawn or dusk, keep a safe distance, and listen. It’s a sound you don’t forget.

Dates Worth Knowing

Grand Teton National Park doesn’t close for winter — but October is the final window for many of its visitor services and seasonal facilities. A few dates to put on your calendar:

▪ Sunday, Oct 18 — Final night at Yellowstone’s historic Old Faithful Inn, built in the early 1900s beside the world’s most famous geyser.

▪ Tuesday, Oct 27 — Free entrance day at Grand Teton (and all national parks) in honor of Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday. One more reason to head in.

▪ Saturday, Oct 31 — Final day for the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center in Moose and seasonal changes on the Moose-Wilson Road before winter closures.

| Local tip: October park trips need a little more flexibility than summer ones. Check road and weather conditions the morning you leave, keep your fuel tank comfortably full, bring food and water, and never assume a summer service will still be operating.

Halloween in Jackson Hole

A Haunting Halloween — October 9–31

Jackson Hole Playhouse transforms the oldest building in town into a Halloween experience filled with spooky songs, theatrical surprises, and a little haunted Jackson history. A fun way to spend an October evening after a day exploring the parks.

Halloween on Town Square — Friday, October 30

Downtown Jackson gets into costume for The Haunting of JH: Halloween on Town Square. Expect costumes, family trick-or-treating, and plenty of Halloween energy beneath Jackson’s famous antler arches.

Halloween Night — Saturday, October 31

The celebration continues Saturday with trick-or-treating around Town Square and Center Street, followed by several grown-up Halloween options downtown. Costumes take over for the Halloween Costume Crawl at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and Silver Dollar Bar, while Bram Stoker’s Dracula brings classic gothic theater to the Pink Garter. Candy with the kids or costumes after dark — Jackson has you covered.

Cowgirls at the Cowboy

Before Halloween takes over downtown, October brings a special run of live music to one of Jackson’s most recognizable venues. Cowgirls at the Cowboy runs October 22–24 at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, featuring singer- songwriters and country artists — the series culminates Saturday, October 24 with the legendary Emmylou Harris . A pretty spectacular excuse to spend an evening beneath those famous neon lights.

Between Fall and Winter

October in Jackson Hole lives somewhere between two seasons. You might spend the morning beneath golden cottonwoods, find snowflakes falling by afternoon, and finish the evening watching the light fade across the National Elk Refuge. That’s part of what makes this month so memorable.

After a final park adventure, an afternoon at Murie Ranch, or Halloween fun downtown, return to Elk Refuge Inn, warm up, and watch the valley settle into its

▪ Friday, Nov 27 — A Big Day for Winter. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is scheduled to open for its 2026–27 winter season, and that same holiday weekend downtown Jackson begins glowing as the Town Square holiday lights return. One of our favorite signs that winter has officially arrived.

▪ Tuesday, Dec 15 — Canadian Brass at the Center for the Arts. The Grand Teton Music Festival welcomes Canadian Brass for a festive holiday concert at 7 p.m. Tickets are already on sale for guests planning a December visit.

▪ And keep watching the Refuge. From October into December, colder temperatures and deeper snow gradually push elk down from their summer ranges toward the valley. When the big winter herds arrive on the National Elk Refuge, they’ll be gathering directly across the road from Elk Refuge Inn.

There’s something special about September in Jackson Hole. Summer’s busy rhythm begins to soften, mornings turn crisp, and hints of gold start appearing across the valley. Before long, entire stands of aspen glow against evergreen forests and blue Wyoming skies.

September invites you to slow down a little. Take the scenic route. Float quietly down the Snake River. Spend an afternoon casting a fly. Pack the camera and follow the color south of town. And this year, don’t miss Jackson Hole’s signature cultural event — the 42nd annual Fall Arts Festival — running September 9– 20.

This month we’re celebrating Jackson Hole’s golden season and a few of our favorite ways to experience it.

A Quieter Side of Jackson Hole

September is a wonderful shift for the valley. Warm summer days give way to cooler mornings and evenings, while the first autumn colors begin transforming the landscape. For guests, that means plenty of outdoor exploration — with an entirely different atmosphere than peak summer.

The 42nd Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival

The Fall Arts Festival is one of the oldest and most beloved celebrations of Western and wildlife art in the country — a 12-day event with more than 50

happenings across the valley. This year’s featured artist is contemporary Western painter Ben Steele , and here are the dates worth building a trip around:

▪ Wednesday, Sept 9 · 5–7 p.m. — Grizzly 399 Sculpture Unveiling at the National Museum of Wildlife Art, right up the road from us.

▪ Friday, Sept 11 · 5–8 p.m. — Palates & Palettes Gallery Walk through downtown Jackson, with hors d’oeuvres, wine, and artist meet-and-greets at participating galleries.

▪ Saturday, Sept 12 — Western Visions® Exhibit opens at the National Museum of Wildlife Art.

▪ Sunday, Sept 13 · 10 a.m.–5 p.m. — Arts on the Green at the Center for the Arts lawn, with 50+ local artists.

See Fall from the Snake River

Not every river adventure needs whitewater. A scenic float along the Snake River lets you settle in and watch the mountain views, changing foliage, and

wildlife drift by. Jackson Hole Whitewater offers scenic floats with private Snake River Ranch access, a quieter river experience away from busy public launches.

| Local tip: Bring an extra layer — mornings on the river feel chilly even when afternoons are warm. And keep the camera close.

Chase the Color, Cast a Line, Listen for the Elk

Take the Scenic Route: Palisades & Snake River Canyon

For a beautiful fall drive beyond the busiest park routes, head south from Jackson toward Hoback Junction and continue through the Snake River Canyon

toward Alpine. The route follows the Snake between forested mountainsides with plenty of changing foliage and classic Wyoming scenery. Take your time; watch for safe pullouts. Color often peaks from mid toward the end of September, but Mother Nature keeps her own schedule — ask our team about current

conditions before heading out.

Fly Fishing in the Golden Season

For anglers, September is prime dry-fly season on rivers throughout Jackson Hole and one of the best months for guided trips on the Snake River. Beginners

welcome — guided experiences are available at every skill level. There’s something wonderfully peaceful about standing beside (or floating down) a Wyoming river on a crisp September day. Reserve ahead; September books up fast.

Listen for the Bugling Elk

September kicks off the elk rut , and if you’re lucky you’ll hear the haunting bugle of a bull elk echo across the valley at dawn or dusk. Grand Teton National Park and the surrounding meadows are the best places to listen — one of the signature sounds of fall in Jackson Hole.

The Great Jackson Hole Burger Stop

After a scenic drive, morning on the river, or afternoon at the Fall Arts Festival, September calls for something simple and satisfying: a really good burger. Jackson has plenty of contenders.

Billy’s Burgers

A Jackson favorite with a long local history. Billy’s serves its famous half-pound burgers alongside waffle fries, barbecue, sandwiches, shakes, and other casual

favorites — now located at the Virginian Lodge, keeping the nostalgic spirit of the original alive.

Just north of Town Square, Liberty Burger puts creative spins on the classic American burger — from straightforward favorites to adventurous combinations. An easy downtown stop after an afternoon exploring the shops.

Jackson Drug & Original Soda Fountain

For a burger with a side of Jackson Hole history, head to Jackson Drug. The original opened in 1919, and today the restored soda fountain continues the

tradition just off Town Square — classic American favorites with locally sourced ingredients, including beef from the family’s Jackson Hole Hereford Ranch. Save room for a house-made milkshake.

| Local tip: Turn lunch into a mini downtown adventure — grab a burger, stroll Town Square, browse the shops, and enjoy Jackson at a slower September pace.

Come Home to the View

September days are made for exploring, but the evenings might be our favorite part. After chasing fall colors, floating the Snake, or spending the afternoon

downtown at Palates & Palettes, return to Elk Refuge Inn and watch the light change across the National Elk Refuge. Open the window to crisp mountain air.

Make something warm to drink. Watch the last light settle over the Sleeping Indian.

Summer may be slipping away, but Jackson Hole isn’t finished putting on a show. Sometimes the quieter season leaves the biggest impression.

June is when the show really begins. Watch for:

The world’s longest-running Town Square Shoot-Out (going since 1957!) takes place six nights a week, May through September, right on the Square.

If you read our April blog, you’ll remember we teased the park openings. Well, the wait is over — Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone are now fully open for the season , and May is arguably the most magical time to visit.

Wildlife Is the Star of the Show

This is why most people come to Jackson Hole — and May delivers like no other month. The valley and the parks are alive right now:

■ Bears are out. Both grizzlies and black bears have emerged from hibernation and are actively foraging at lower elevations. Female bears with cubs are increasingly visible — this is one of the most exciting wildlife events of the year. Keep your distance and bring binoculars.

■ Bison calving season. May is peak calving time for bison in Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Watch for the adorable “red dogs” — newborn calves with reddish-orange coats bouncing alongside the herd. Born weighing 30–70 pounds, they can keep up with the herd just hours after birth.

■ Baby cows on the open range. Right now you’ll spot calves out on the ranch lands surrounding Jackson — little ones resting with their heads nestled into the hay, still nursing from mama. It’s one of those small, charming moments that makes this valley feel so special.

■ Moose, elk & migratory birds. Moose frequent the wetlands, elk herds are active, and migratory birds — including loons and ibises — are passing through on their journey north.

■ Yellowstone National Park — Roads begin opening in phases starting April 17 (Mammoth to Old Faithful via West Entrance). The South Entrance connecting to Grand Teton opens around May 8. The North Entrance at Gardiner, MT is open year-round.

We’re starting the year with exciting updates behind the scenes! Right now, we’re installing new hardwood floors , completing the work one room at a time so we can remain open and welcoming guests throughout the process.

This upgrade includes removing carpet and replacing it with hard flooring for a cleaner, brighter, and more modern feel. We’ve listened closely to guest feedback, and many travelers now strongly prefer hard floors — especially for comfort, cleanliness, and allergy-friendly stays.

Our goal is to complete this phase by February , and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome guests into these refreshed spaces.
